Recognizing Contributions to the Sports Medicine Profession
Every year, AOSSM recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to orthopaedic sports medicine and the Society. Award recipients will be announced at the upcoming Annual Meeting. In the meantime, the following awards are open for nominations/applications.
Society Awards
The Thomas A. Brady Award recognizes the service and dedication to sports medicine of those individuals who have made a mark on their local community. Since 1999, the award has been given to an orthopaedic surgeon who has been dedicated to excellence in sports medicine on a local level, with local athletes.
This year, AOSSM will recognize K. Donald Shelbourne, MD.
This award is given annually to an individual AOSSM member to recognize their contribution to sports medicine education over the years. The award recognizes significant contributions to the educational function of the Society and to orthopaedic sports medicine. Begun in 1989, the recipient is chosen by the Education Committee.
This year, AOSSM will recognize James P. Bradley, MD.
Congratulations to Aaron Krych, MD and Jeffrey Dugas, MD on winning the coveted Red Jacket during the 2023 Masters Competition. This competition celebrates AOSSM luminaries as they present an innovation or technology that has provided high-end and far-reaching impact to their patients.
Being inducted into the Hall of Fame is one of the highest honors given to a Society member, and we congratulate the inductees on their great achievements in sports medicine. They will be honored at the Annual Meeting on Saturday, July 15.
This award pays special tribute for distinguished service, contributions, and loyalty to AOSSM and the orthopaedic sports medicine profession. This year, AOSSM honors Jack McVicker from The Aircast Foundation and Smith+Nephew.
Research Awards
The Cabaud Memorial Award is given annually, in honor of Henry Edward Cabaud, III, MD, by the Research Committee to the best full-length manuscript submitted that pertains to hard or soft tissue biology, in-vitro research, laboratory or “bench-type” research, or in-vivo animal research.

The O’Donoghue Sports Injury Research Award, in honor of Don H. O'Donoghue, MD, is given annually by the Research Committee to the best full-length manuscript that pertains to clinical-based research or human in-vivo research.

Congratulations to the 2023 Playmaker Grant Winners
During the 2023 AOSSM Annual Meeting, ten finalists competed in the Playmaker Grant Lab. The Playmaker Grant Lab is generously supported by The Aircast Foundation and is a shark tank style competition where finalists had 5 minutes to “pitch” their grant proposal, followed by 5 minutes of Q&A from our panel of judges. Our judging panel was comprised of members of the AOSSM Research Committee and previous Playmaker Grant winners. This year, three winners were selected at the end of the session in Washington, DC and were awarded $25,000 each:

The Fellow Research Awards are given annually by the Fellowship Committee to the best research submitted by abstract for the AOSSM Annual Meeting from a sports medicine fellow. The awards are given in two categories, Clinical Science and Basic Science.
Title of Paper: Inferior Hill-Sachs Position Predicts Failure Following Primary Bankart Repair for On-Track Lesions

The STOP Sports Injuries Award recognizes outstanding research presented at the Annual Meeting related to youth sports injury prevention, treatment, or rehabilitation. The winner is selected by the STOP Sports Injuries Outreach Committee.
