AOSSM-AF Think Tank: Clinical Research Gaps in the Prevention and Treatment of Hip Osteoarthritis (non-CME)
Separate Registration Required
Hosted by AOSSM and the Arthritis Foundation, this Think Tank will focus on hip preservation and the prevention of hip osteoarthritis (OA). This includes conditions such as hip dysplasia, FAI, community outreach for early diagnosis of FAI, and the role of joint capsule management in OA development. We will discuss cellular, imaging, surgical, and physical therapy considerations in the prevention and treatment of hip OA, as well as the identification of populations who are at higher risk for rapidly accelerating disease. Importantly, we will include a focus on sport surgeons and athletes/active people---realizing the potential for sports medicine surgeons to have a greater impact on maintaining hip joint health and improving outcomes for patients with hip OA. The Think Tank will examine the existing literature, knowledge gaps, new innovations, and current best practices related to clinical research trials in hip OA. Join us for discussion and small group breakout sessions. Your input will be valuable as we plan a new funding opportunity announcement to be released in 2026.

IC6: Practical Surgical Augmentation of Rotator Cuff Repair Using Biologics (CME)
Moderator: Augustus “Gus” Mazzocca, MD
Despite continued technical improvements in rotator cuff repair, healing rates have plateaued. As a result, a variety of approaches have been proposed to augment the rotator cuff repair healing response. This Instructional Course Lecture will provide attendees with current approaches to cell-based biologic augmentation of rotator cuff repair. Lectures from experts in different methods of biologic augmentation will highlight a variety of current augmentation strategies, with a focus on basic science rationale for use of biologics in rotator cuff repair, clinical evidence regarding their use, and technical tips to implement strategies into practice. Techniques discussed include bone marrow aspirate concentrate, platelet-rich plasma, enthesis augmentation, microfragmented lipoaspirate tissue, and subacromial bursa reimplantation. At the completion of the lectures, ample time for questions and discussion permit further in-depth learning.

IC7: The Collision Course: A Case Based Approach to Management of Complex Injuries in Collision Sport Athletes (CME)
Moderators: Kevin W. Farmer, MD; Mary Mulcahey, MD; Gautam Yagnik, MD
Collision sports like football, hockey, rugby and lacrosse can result in significant and unusual injuries that can be challenging to manage for any team physician. In this case based ICL, we will focus on the collision sport athlete and examine injury patterns, treatment strategies and return to play decisions in these athletes. A variety of cases from simple to complex will be presented and discussed in a collaborative fashion. We will explore topics like multi-ligamentous knee injuries, elbow dislocations, and recurrent shoulder instability. Faculty will each present a challenging case from their own practice to a panel of experts for discussion. We will rotate the panel to ensure a wide variety of opinions and approaches. Cases will be presented in a rapid-fire format to maximize the number and diversity of cases that will be covered and will include athletes from all levels of play. This course will be highly interactive and engaging with ample time for discussion among faculty and participants. Audience participation will be critical, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own cases for discussion.

IC10: Sideline Decision-Making in the Heat of Battle: What Every Team Physician Should Know Now (CME)
Moderator: Peter A. Indelicato, MD
On-site coverage of contact team sporting events and how we manage those injuries in the first 48 hours is vital to the success of team physicians. Who is out and who is in. What studies do we need to evaluate injuries, determine return to game play/practice and exactly at what time it can be done safely. We will cover both upper and lower extremity issues with a focus on those injuries that are commonly seen on "game day". We will also discuss what changes are happening within our workspace and how they may change what we do given the medical-legal climate of NIL. This is the type of ICL that is hard to find in a textbook. Only years of experience of on-site coverage do you learn this specific skill set. In detail, the panel will discuss the actual event, the first 24-48 hours post injury, and the first week of possible return to practice/play steps. What diagnosis can we not miss! If surgery is needed, what does return to play milestones are necessary.

IC11: Everything You Need to Know to Perform Successful Shoulder Arthroplasty: Preoperative Planning, TSA, RTSA and Revision Arthroplasty (CME)
Moderators: Peter N. Chalmers, MD and Brian Werner, MD
Shoulder arthroplasty has become a more common procedure among sports surgeons. While many sports surgeons are well versed in shoulder arthroplasty, there have been significant advancements made in preoperative planning as well as implant position over the last several years that can impact outcomes. The purpose of this ICL is to first discuss preoperative planning in shoulder arthroplasty, review the pros and cons, and make sure the attendees are comfortable with various planning software. The ICL will then review how to properly translate the plan to the OR for both anatomic and reverse shoulder arthroplasty. The instructors will provide their algorithms for successful TSA and RTSA. We will then review revision shoulder arthroplasty and touch on several preoperative planning and operative pearls to help make this surgery less intimidating. Finally, the panel will discuss several cases in an interactive format with the attendees.

IC12: Sports-Specific Approach to the Athlete's Hip (CME)
Moderator: Marc R. Safran, MD
Hip injuries in athletes are being identified more and more frequently. The importance of the hip in athletic performance has also received increased interest lately. As a result of these factors, there has been a greater focus on hip function and injury, making this area of sports medicine one of the areas of rapid growth and advancement. The goal of this ICL is to discuss the more common injury patterns at the hip seen in different sports, their evaluation, latest management techniques, and expectations for return to sport by hip arthroscopy experts who have vast experience in caring for many collegiate, professional and Olympic athletes.
