Recognizing Contributions to the Sports Medicine Profession

Every year, AOSSM recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to orthopaedic sports medicine and the Society. Award recipients are recognized at Annual Meeting and on this page.

Society Awards

Masters Competition

This competition celebrates sports medicine luminaries as they compete for the coveted AOSSM Red Jacket each year at the Annual Meeting. Finalists deliver a short (~5-7 min) presentation on an innovation or technology that has provided high-end and far-reaching impact to their patients. Then, a panel of judges and the audience participate in Q&A. At the close of the session, winners are chosen, and the Red Jacket is awarded.

Hall of Fame

About the Hall of Fame

In 2001, AOSSM established the Hall of Fame to honor members of the orthopaedic sports medicine community who have contributed significantly to the specialty and set themselves apart. Being inducted into the Hall of Fame is one of the highest honors given to a Society member, and we congratulate the inductees on their great achievements in sports medicine.

Publication Awards

AJSM Hughston Award

The Hughston Award is given annually for the most outstanding paper appearing in the American Journal of Sports Medicine (AJSM) prior to the award. Jack C. Hughston, the founder of AJSM, is one of the pioneers in sports medicine. Early on he recognized the need for immediate diagnosis and surgical correction of ligamentous injuries about the knee in order to achieve optimum results. He performed numerous cadaver and clinical studies to develop the concept of anatomical repair of injured structures in the knee and developed a classification system based upon his clinical observations and studies.

Dr. Hughston served as President of AOSSM from 1974-75, Editor of AJSM during 1972-1990, and Chairman of AJSM from 1990-2001. He also received the Mr. Sports Medicine Award from AOSSM in 1976.

Dr. Hughston was instrumental in organizing other physicians throughout the country to form AOSSM. In the late 1970s, he developed what became AJSM, which evolved into the pre-eminent journal for orthopaedic sports medicine in the world. For these two achievements alone he will be forever recognized as one who had a true dedication to the field of sports medicine.
